De Old English Bulldog is een hond die gefokt is uit de Bulldog uit Engeland ten tijde van de 18e eeuw. Deze Bulldog werd gebruikt om te vechten tegen allerlei opponenten zoals stieren, beren, apen, leeuwen, enz.

De Bulldog is wel een hond die trouw is aan zijn baas, erg vasthoudend is, en graag willen werken voor zijn baas. Dit karakter hoort bij een compacte hond in een atletisch zwaar bespierd, niet al te groot lichaam in de gewichtsklasse van rond de 30 Kg (uiteraard met grotere en kleinere exemplaren)

Uit deze Bulldog zijn meerdere rassen voortgekomen, zoals bijv. de Bullmastiff, Engelse Bulldog, American Bulldog en de Pittbullterriër. Echter alleen de American Bulldog wordt gezien als een directe afstammeling.

De Bulldog van tegenwoordig vecht niet meer met stieren e.d., maar is een ideale gezinshond, een echte Bull, maar met een groot hart voor de baas. Deze hond leeft onder de mensen en met de mensen, in de gezinnen en tussen de kinderen.

De Old English Bulldog van nu heeft het zelfde karakter en de hardheid van de Bulldog, echter zonder de scherpe kantjes van vroeger.
